Derek Lovley is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts (USA) and Director of the Electrobiomaterials Institute at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China. His research focuses on both basic and applied aspects of anaerobic microbiology with a current focus on applications of protein nanowires in biomedical electronic devices; microbial metal corrosion; and the role of electroactive microbes in bioenergy, bioremediation, and biogeochemistry. Dr. Lovley has received many awards including Popular Science’s ‘Best of What’s New in Environmental Technology’; the Proctor and Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology; and the Institute for Scientific Information’s ‘Most Highly Cited’ (H-index 190). He has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, many of them in Nature and Science. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology.

Christophe Leger is Director of Research and group leader at the CNRS in Marseille, France. He graduated in Bordeaux in 1999, and became interested in the electrochemistry of metalloenzymes as a post doc in the group of Fraser Armstrong in Oxford. He uses direct electrochemistry to study enzyme mechanisms and structure-function relationships in various enzymes that produce or consume “solar fuels”: hydrogenases, CO dehydrogenases and formate dehydrogenases.

Javier Raso is a Full Professor and research leader at the Food Technology laboratory at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). He has been visiting researcher of the Microbiology Department at Unilever Research in Bedford (UK), the Department of Food Biotechnology and Food Process Engineering at Technical University of Berlin (Germany), and the Biological Systems Engineering Department at Washington State University (USA). His research is focused on the field of food processing by thermal and non-thermal technologies with the aim of transferring basic knowledge to industrial processes in order to improve sustainability, food quality, and safety. He is the current president of the International Society of Electroporation-based Technologies and Treatments.

Petra Hellwig is Professor at the University of Strasbourg (France) in the Faculty of Chemistry, directs the PhD school of chemical sciences, the research unit UMR 7140, as well as the Laboratory of Bioelectrochemistry and Spectroscopy. She has been a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics at the University of Frankfurt (Germany) and at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (USA). She was awarded an ANR (French National Research Agency) Junior Chair of Excellence in 2007 a, she was junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) from 2010-2015 and senior since 2022. With her interdisciplinary expertise in biophysics and physical chemistry she uses vibrational spectroscopy and bioelectrochemistry for the study of the reaction mechanism of membrane proteins and their principle(s) of operation. Her research focuses on enzymes from the respiratory chain and as membrane transporters.
